Paola “Poli” Berber, a seasoned ultracyclist from Mexico, recently participated in the Alma Andina ultracycling race in Peru. This grassroots event, organized by Peruvian rider Luigi Acosta, spanned 620 kilometers (385 miles) with approximately 10,000 meters (32,800 feet) of elevation gain, featuring a mix of 65% pavement and 35% dirt roads. The race commenced and concluded in Cuzco, tracing a large figure-eight around the Ausangate area, a region renowned for its sacred mountains. Participants traversed some of the highest and most remote sections of the Andes, including the Abra de Jahuaycate pass at 5,070 meters (16,634 feet), followed by approximately 20 kilometers of high plateau above 4,900 meters (16,000 feet). Berber, who had previously faced health challenges earlier in the year, found the race to be a significant test of her endurance and resilience. She recounted moments when altitude, exhaustion, and mechanical issues threatened to end her ride, but she discovered that moving forward sometimes means letting go of the plan. The Alma Andina race attracted a small, local field of 20 riders, with only four women participating. Berber and her partner, Cooper, were the only foreigners in the event.
