In July 2023, the cycling world was struck by tragedy when 17-year-old Magnus White was fatally injured while training near Boulder, Colorado. A promising talent, White was preparing to represent the United States at the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Scotland. His death was the result of a reckless vehicular homicide committed by Yeva Smilianska, who was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the incident. (cpr.org)

In April 2025, Smilianska was convicted and sentenced to four years in Colorado state prison, followed by three years of mandatory parole. However, recent developments have raised concerns about her potential early release. Smilianska applied for community corrections, a form of early release, but her application was denied in Boulder County. She remains incarcerated at the La Vista Correctional Facility in Pueblo, Colorado. (axios.com)

Magnus White’s family, along with The White Line Foundation—a nonprofit organization dedicated to road safety and the protection of vulnerable road users—are actively seeking support from the cycling community. They are urging individuals to submit letters to the Colorado State Board of Parole by October 8, 2026, ahead of Smilianska’s parole hearing scheduled for October 15, 2026. These letters should express the impact of White’s death on the community and advocate for the continuation of Smilianska’s incarceration.

The White Line Foundation has facilitated this process by providing a letter-writing tool, making it easier for supporters to participate. The organization emphasizes that personal acquaintance with Magnus White is not a prerequisite for submitting a letter; rather, they encourage all cyclists, runners, pedestrians, drivers, and anyone affected by road safety issues to voice their concerns. The collective effort aims to ensure that justice is served and that the memory of Magnus White is honored.

For more information and to access the letter-writing tool, please visit The White Line Foundation’s official website.

By uniting in this cause, the cycling community can play a pivotal role in advocating for road safety and holding individuals accountable for their actions, ensuring that such tragedies do not repeat.
