The 2026 UEC Road European Championships are set to take place from October 2 to October 7 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. This marks the first time Slovenia will host this prestigious event, featuring 14 continental titles up for grabs and approximately 800 riders from over 40 nations. The competitions will be concentrated between Ljubljana and the Gorenjska region, nestled at the foot of the Kamnik Alps. A central feature of the event is a 22.1 km circuit that includes the Možjanca climb—a 2.1 km ascent with an average gradient of 10.2%—which the men’s elite road race will tackle five times.

Event Schedule:

Friday, October 2:

Saturday, October 3:

Sunday, October 4:

Tuesday, October 6:

Wednesday, October 7:

Race Courses:

All 14 races will utilize the same 22.1 km circuit, featuring 367 meters of elevation gain per lap. The route begins in the plains between Cerklje na Gorenjskem and Šenčur, beneath the Krvavec mountain. The course gently ascends towards Olševek and Tupaliče, then confronts the Možjanca climb: a 2.1 km stretch with an average gradient of 10.2%, peaking at 15.8%, and the final 200 meters being particularly challenging. At the summit, there’s no respite, as the course continues on a narrow, undulating road without recovery sections, followed by a technical descent to the Krvavec cable car valley station, and concluding with a fast, flat 7 km stretch.

Men’s Elite Road Race (Sunday, October 4):

This race covers 196.3 km with 2,571 meters of elevation gain. After a 9 km neutralized transfer through central Ljubljana, passing the Triple Bridge, the peloton will traverse Škofja Loka, Kranj, and the Volčji Potok Arboretum before entering the circuit, which will be repeated five times. The final ascent of Možjanca occurs approximately 13 km from the finish line, serving as an ideal launch pad for a long-range attack, yet it’s distant enough to allow a small group to regroup.

Women’s Elite Road Race (Saturday, October 3):

This race spans 130 km with 1,359 meters of elevation gain, starting from Ljubljana and featuring two laps of the circuit. Two ascents of Možjanca are sufficient to create selection, but they also leave the door open for strong sprinters who can handle the climbs.

Individual Time Trials (Wednesday, October 7):

Each individual time trial is a single lap of the 22.1 km circuit, including the Možjanca climb. This design is intentional: according to course designer Tomaž Poljanec, the time trial “is not particularly suited to pure specialists,” making the outcome more open. Climbers can gain time on the ascent, while time trialists can recover during the final 7 km flat section.

Mixed Relay (Tuesday, October 6):

This event consists of two laps of the circuit, totaling 44.3 km with 733 meters of elevation gain. Each national team fields a male and a female trio, with Možjanca being tackled at full effort in both sections.

Notable Absence: Tadej Pogačar

Tadej Pogačar, the reigning world and European champion, is the notable absentee from this year’s championships. Despite his name appearing on Slovenia’s preliminary entry list for the October 4 road race, the team has confirmed that he will not return to competition in 2026. Pogačar suffered a significant crash on August 29 during the Vuelta a España, resulting in a concussion, a fractured left clavicle (which required surgery), a stable cervical fracture, and multiple abrasions. This injury forced him to withdraw from the World Championships in Montréal, where his teammate Brandon McNulty secured a surprise victory. Pogačar has since resumed light training but has prioritized full recovery, aiming to return to peak form in 2027.

Favorites and Contenders:

Men’s Elite Road Race:

With Pogačar absent, the spotlight shifts to Remco Evenepoel. The Belgian rider, who finished second in the 2025 European Championships behind Pogačar, arrives fresh off his fourth world time trial title in Montréal. On a circuit featuring a
