Giro’s Imperial All-Season Road Shoes: A Comprehensive Review

As the cycling season transitions, riders often face the dilemma of whether to store their bikes or brave the elements. For those determined to ride through cooler, wetter conditions, the choice of footwear becomes paramount. Enter the Giro Imperial All-Season (AS) Road Shoes—a high-performance solution tailored for adverse weather without compromising on race-day efficiency.

Design and Construction

The Imperial AS retains the sleek aesthetics of its predecessor, the Imperial II, while introducing enhancements suited for inclement weather. The upper features a seamless, one-piece design with subtle perforations, effectively blocking wind and light moisture. This design ensures that the shoe remains breathable, preventing the buildup of heat and moisture during intense rides. (radsport-news.com)

Performance and Comfort

Weighing approximately 234 grams in size 43, the Imperial AS is impressively light for a shoe designed for all-season use. The Forged Carbon sole offers exceptional stiffness, translating to efficient power transfer during sprints and climbs. The BOA Li2 dials provide precise, micro-adjustable fit, ensuring optimal comfort and support. (granfondo-cycling.com)

Weather Protection

While not entirely waterproof, the Imperial AS offers significant protection against wind and light rain. The TPU-coated mesh upper effectively repels water and dirt, keeping the shoes cleaner and reducing maintenance time. However, in heavy downpours, additional protection like overshoes may be necessary. (granfondo-cycling.com)
