Central to this development is the Coordinamento dal Basso, a network of associations and citizens that has been actively involved in the project’s evolution for over a decade. In 2015, they organized the first “Cicloesplorazione dell’Acquedotto Pugliese,” an initiative aimed at highlighting and advocating for a route that, at the time, existed only on paper and in the efforts of those who traversed it unofficially. From September 21 to 24, the Coordinamento dal Basso is organizing a new edition of the Cicloesplorazione. The event aims to revitalize the cultural and tourist enhancement of the historic conduits of the Acquedotto. Beyond being an opportunity for cycling and socializing, the initiative seeks to involve as many associations of cyclists and hikers, local tourist offices, operators, and municipal administrations of the affected areas as possible. The goal is to promote the ciclovia as a true greenway of the South and to expand the network of the Coordinamento to new local realities willing to contribute to its activities. The four-day event will also focus on reflecting on activities to support the future management and promotion of the route, assessing strengths and weaknesses in the section affected by the works, and formulating a list of requests to the managing entities, Regione Puglia, and Acquedotto Pugliese SpA. Notably, the new section has not yet been officially inaugurated, and the Cicloesplorazione serves as an occasion to urge Regione Puglia and Acquedotto Pugliese SpA to grant transit permission, which is currently under negotiation. The Cicloesplorazione is structured into two groups traveling in opposite directions of the ciclovia to then meet. Group 1 departs from Spinazzola on September 21, with a public meeting in the town, and the following day reaches Ruvo di Puglia passing through Castel del Monte, for a total of 62 kilometers between the ciclovia and the connecting belt. On September 23, the group continues towards Cassano delle Murge (61 km), where an evening public meeting is scheduled together with Group 2. Group 2, on the other hand, departs from Grottaglie and Villa Castelli, also on September 21, with its own local public meeting. On September 22, it cycles to Alberobello passing through Coreggia, 52 kilometers in total, and the following day also reaches Cassano delle Murge, covering 67 kilometers, for the joint meeting with Group 1. On September 24, the two groups, now reunited, cycle together from Cassano delle Murge to Bari, 42 kilometers along the cycling path of the Cammino Materano, to arrive at the Fiera del Levante in time for the institutional meeting on the Apulian cycling routes. The public meetings will be intentionally informal, hosted from time to time in an associative venue, a bar, or a town square, with an indicative meeting time around 6:30-7:00 pm.
